Bol.com stops selling disposable plastic

17 February 2020

Bol.com will stop selling disposable plastic, such as plastic cutlery, cups, straws and cotton buds. Instead, sustainable and biodegradable alternatives are available to bol.com’s 10 million customers. For example, cups made of corn starch. With this measure bol.com is ahead of the European legislation, which will prohibit the sale of certain plastic disposables from 2021.

According to the European Commission, more than 70% of the litter in the ocean consists of plastic. In addition to discarded fishing nets, this plastic soup is mainly formed by single-use products. Bol.com expects to save 500 kilos of plastic per year by stopping the sale of disposable plastic on the online platform.

More sustainable assortment

Bol.com wants to make it as easy as possible for customers to store more consciously online. Jori Ebskamp, lead in sustainability at bol.com: “Therefore, we put a lot of energy in making our assortment more sustainable and stopping the sale of disposable plastic is a very logical step for us. Last autumn, bol.com opened its sustainability store, in which we bring together the widest range of responsible products online. By continuously expanding the sustainable store, we aim to offer a more sustainable alternative in every product category within a few years.”

In the sustainable store, bol.com offers customers a wide selection of alternatives to disposable plastic, such as silicone reusable cotton buds, cardboard plates, stainless steel straws, wooden cutlery and cups made from cornstarch and sugar cane.

Ambition: climate-neutral shopping

The sustainable ambitions of bol.com go beyond measures in the field of assortment. The goal is to enable climate-neutral shopping by 2025. This means a CO2 emission of 0 grams per package. Bol.com focuses on the activities in which it can take responsibility: from the moment articles arrive at the fulfillment center to delivery to the customer’s doorstep, and everything in between.
