Interface launches first carpet tile collection with innovative CQuest™ Bio backing

16 September 2020

Flooring manufacturer Interface today launches its new NY+LON Streets carpet tile collection in the Netherlands. This tile features an innovative backing: The CQuest™ Bio backing. With this backing, made with CO2-negative materials, Interface realizes a significant CO2 reduction of the floor products. An important step in the company’s Climate Take Back mission, which aims to make a positive contribution to reversing global warming through the development of sustainable flooring products and the use of carbon as a building block.

“To continue our Climate Take Back mission, our job is to find innovative ways to further reduce the carbon footprint of our products,” says Janneke Leenaars, sustainability manager at Interface, about this innovation. “This new backing with CO2-negative materials contributes to this. Moreover, we can now support our customers even better in achieving their own goals in terms of CO2 reduction and circular economy.”

Biobased materials
Interface’s mission is to reduce the carbon footprint of spaces such as hospitals, offices and school buildings. Through research and innovation, Interface further optimized the backing development process, resulting in the CQuest™ Bio backing. This process began by adding new biobased materials and more recycled material. Interface then measured how these materials affect the carbon footprint. These new materials were individually measured to be net CO2 negative, reducing the carbon footprint of the entire carpet tile. The carbon footprint of the products is officially validated through independently reviewed and registered Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These declarations make it possible to compare the CO2 impact of comparable products. The EPDs of the newly launched collection will be published in October.

Urban influences
The NY+LON Streets collection is inspired by New York City and London and designed by David Oakey. The rug collection uses playful, fresh textures and patterns to give a new perspective on cities. The different patterns are reminiscent of urban elements such as asphalt, worn metal and characteristic pavement. The tiles’ size (50 x 50 cm) allows architects and designers to easily and efficiently combine the carpet tiles with Interface luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and nora rubber flooring for maximum sustainability.
