Sustainable flooring manufacturer recognized as a leader on climate change

The United Nations Climate Change Team has announced that Interface is the winner of the 2020 United Nations Global Climate Action Awards in the Climate Neutral Now category. These awards, part of UN Climate Change’s Momentum for Change initiative, focus on pioneers in the field of climate change. Interface is one of 13 award-winning projects honored for their efforts to address climate change.

The project “From Mission Zero to Climate Take Back: How Interface is Transforming its Business to Have Zero Negative Impact” is a winner in the Climate Neutral Now category. The project showcases Interface’s efforts to become C02 neutral by measuring and reducing emissions. Interface’s key achievements in this area include reducing the carbon footprint of its carpet tiles by 74% and reducing greenhouse gases at Interface’s factories by 96% since 1996.

Mission Zero and Climate Take Back
Interface receives this award specifically because of all the efforts the company has made to become climate neutral by 2020. With this mission, which began in 1994 and was later called Mission Zero®, Interface began the journey to become a sustainability leader. After achieving this in November 2019, Interface embarked on the Climate Take Back mission, which aims to make a significant contribution to reversing global warming. Earlier this month, the company announced a new development within this mission: a new carpet tile backing, the CQuest™ Bio. Measured on a stand-alone basis, these materials in this innovative backing are net carbon negative, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the product.

About the award
The United Nations Global Climate Action Awards, initiative of the United Nations, recognize the world’s most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of action to address climate change. The 13 award-winning projects fall within three areas: Climate Neutral Now, Women for Results and Financing for Climate Friendly Investments.

“The past few months have been a nightmare for many,” said Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of UN Climate Change. “COVID-19 has changed lives, economies and businesses on every continent – from the largest cities to the smallest villages. It is the greatest threat facing humanity today, but we must not forget that climate change is the greatest long-term threat to humanity. The convergence of these two crises has opened up an opportunity to build forward – to build cities and communities that are safe, healthy, green and sustainable.”

All projects will be showcased during a series of special online events in November and December. For more information, click here.
