Helma van Heerikhuize, director of Museum Het Grachtenhuis: “In our house we do what people have done well for thousands of years: tell stories. The stories about the canals make you love Amsterdam even more. Now we’re combining the stories of the canals with the stories of the paintings and painters. This makes you love their work â⒬“ and the Amsterdam canals even more.” Many of the pieces come from private ownership and have never been shown in a museum before.
Israel comes to stay at Museum Het Grachtenhuis
The post-impressionist artist Isaac Israëls (1865-1934) was born in Amsterdam and lived and worked in the same city.
In his choice of subjects we see the typical attention to accidental, passing moments and fleeting atmospheres. Israëls often painted figures and much attention was paid to everyday life. As can be seen in the ‘Walker’ along the Amsterdam canal, the ‘Merchant on the Prinsengracht near the Noordermarkt’ and the ‘Telephone operators’. Works such as ‘At the fashionistress’, ‘Walking lady on the Scheveningen pier’ and ‘Woman dressed in long green dress punting’ show that he was also interested in the luxurious life of the elite. All were exhibited in The Canal House. Israel’s work was, and still is, intended for the wealthy bourgeoisie. His paintings hung and still hang in the canal houses of Amsterdam.
Three Post Impressionists in Amsterdam
Isaac Israëls, Jan Sluijters and George Hendrik Breitner all have a link to Amsterdam. The three impressionists lived and worked in Amsterdam and were inspired in their work by the squares, canals and people of the city. While the life of Isaac Israëls began in our capital city in 1865, that of Jan Sluijters also ended in Amsterdam in 1957. Israëls, Sluijters and Breitner were also acquaintances and all three were members of Arti et Amicitae.
About The Canal House
The Canal House tells the story of the Amsterdam canals in an adventurous way. The museum, housed in a monumental building on the Herengracht, offers an interactive tour along 400 years of history. The Canal House not only shows the special history of the Amsterdam canals, but also emphasizes their unique contemporary character. The Grachtenhuis is for everyone who loves the city, or is about to fall in love with it. www.hetgrachtenhuis.nl.
The paintings by Isaac Israëls, which can be seen during the exhibition, are also for sale. With charity dinners, the museum is doing its bit for charity. A percentage of the proceeds are donated to the Stichting Vier het Leven. The foundation is dedicated to helping people of advanced age because it is often difficult for them to visit a museum or engage in other cultural activities outside their home. Volunteers from the Vier het Leven foundation make sure that elderly people can continue to enjoy, for example, visiting a museum. In this way, the foundation contributes to the prevention of loneliness.
The Grachtenhuis offers private and business arrangements outside of opening hours. During this unique sales exhibition it is possible to dine exclusively among the masterpieces of Israëls.
The exhibition ‘Israëls comes to stay at Museum Het Grachtenhuis’ can be visited from 3 March to 15 April 2018 at Het Grachtenhuis, Herengracht 386, 1016CJ Amsterdam. The exhibition is made possible by the collaboration with art dealer Peter Pappot, specialized in painting by Dutch and Belgian masters from the period 1800 – 1950.
