Watching the night work at Central Station

Did you know that an underground bicycle parking with space for 7,000 bicycles is being created at Central Station? The contracting company Max Bögl is responsible for Project The Entrance, in which the city side of Central Station and the immediate surroundings will be refurbished. De Wolven is helping Max Bögl with the environmental communication for travelers, residents and business owners so that all those involved are kept informed of the work. Last month De Wolven literally had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and ask Matthijs Buter and John Verheul what goes on at the construction site at night.

While Amsterdam is sleeping soundly, the builders at Stationsplein are working hard. Night work is annoying for local residents. Project De Entree tries to do this as little as possible, but it is still necessary a few nights a month. What happens at the construction site? And what is it like to start so early?

Sleep early, get up early
In total, about 20 builders are at work each night. Traffic controllers also help keep the area as safe as possible for late-night station visitors during the night. How do the builders stay awake when they have to get up so early to work? John: “When the builders work at night, they often go to bed at 7pm and get up at 10pm. With a cup of coffee they start the preparations here at 10:30. Then they work until 04.00 or 05.00 at night and after that they sleep again. But this is an exception, it doesn’t happen very often. And of course we’re working in a wonderful place: Amsterdam in the middle of the night, that’s quite special.”
