Strike a pose: Museum Night Amsterdam opens with vogue extravaganza at the Tropenmuseum

During the opening of the museum night, the Tropenmuseum will be transformed into a hysterical ballroom full of live art, fashion and especially: party. To the musical accompaniment of rap formation Zwart Licht, D.O.L.HOUSE (known from Milkshake Festival, among others) will give away an extravagant Voguing performance on the catwalk, to usher in the eighteenth edition of the museum night in style. Rapper and columnist Massih Hutak opens the show with an ode to Amsterdam-Noord.
Opening Extravaganza
During the opening of Museum Night Amsterdam, the birds of paradise from D.O.L.HOUSE will go to war with a performance inspired by the ballroom scene. Hip Hop formation Zwart Licht, consisting of producer Hayzee and rappers Akwasi and Leeroy, will provide the moths with musical accompaniment. They will play songs from their new album Bliksem, which will be released soon.
Ballroom what?
The Ballroom Scene originated in the 1970s in various disadvantaged neighborhoods in the United States. Due to lack of acceptance, many LGBT youth from Latino and African American communities sought each other out and formed their own families, also called houses. The different houses found each other in ballrooms, where they held dance battles in different categories such as Runway and Vogue, inspired by fashion and Hollywood icons.
Program Museum Night Amsterdam
With 53 different participating museums, the program has something for everyone; from great classics at the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum or the Stedelijk to hidden gems like the Amsterdam Pipe Museum, Ons lieve Heer op Solder or the Pianola Museum. The Museum Night is especially designed to familiarize a young and diverse audience with Amsterdam’s museums.
Some highlights of the program are: squirting at Mediamatic, Max Havelaar with zombies at the Multatuli House, How expensive was the sugar by Typhoon at the Stadsarchief and a poetic night walk across a cemetery by funeral museum Tot Zover. See the website of Museumnacht Amsterdam for the rest of the program.
Amsterdam, a unique city
Amsterdam is known for its diversity; both as its inhabitants and museums. With 180 different nationalities and over 50 museums, Amsterdam is the largest gathering place of stories in the world. Stories that are sometimes carried visibly, and sometimes invisibly. Instead of naming these differences, during Museum Night we want to celebrate that we are different, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference or whatever. During Museum Night Amsterdam everyone is welcome!
