Entre nous – Because we are
After more than a year of stifled desire, the theme of this summer edition, which was initially intended to take place in the spring of 2021, turns out to be more than current. Artists go into the neighborhood and design new work for a location of their own choosing, such as an underground cellar under the Zeilbrug or a mysterious island that suddenly emerges in the Vondelpark. From their own observation and discipline, the artists aim their arrows at the city where dreams, obsessions and idiosyncrasies converge. This results in an art manifestation in which the underlying motif, ‘the magic of the encounter’, is explored in all its facets.
During the opening and throughout these 6 weeks there will be guided tours, performances and interventions.
Grunberg introduces you to evil – G.O.A.T. [Greatest of all times].
Immediately following the opening, a group of 12 participants selected by Arnon Grunberg will depart from the Art Foundation for a desert island not far from Amsterdam. Grunberg, as spiritual leader of the group, will establish a temporary religion here. For two days and nights, he and those “selected” will make confession. The commune will eat, dance, sleep, bathe, read, write, fight and much more together. Want to participate in this project? Click here for more information.
Question marks, mutations and an elusive universe in the Schinkel neighbourhood
Tibor Dieters | Viral | Sloterkade 171
The young artist Tibor Dieters shows at the main location of the Art Foundation a hypnotic journey through mutating images from disturbing memes that he collected on the Internet, driven by algorithms. The installation visualizes the self-flattering power of social media. Dieters stood out with his final exam work at the KABK, where he also made intelligent use of existing systems in order to have them dismantle themselves.
Manon van Hoeckel | Vaarwelkom | Schinkelbuurt
On the Zeilbrug on the Schinkel stands a cartoon-like installation with flags, text and a large hand, controlled by foot pedals by passers-by; VAARWELKOM by Manon van Hoeckel. Of course passing steersmen wave back, beaming at us with the regained lightness of existence. The encounter is a recurring theme for van Hoeckel. For example, van Hoeckel designed a laundrette in Boymans van Beuningen to attract local residents to the museum and bring them into contact with each other.
Zoro Feigl | Phosphenes | Cellar Sailing Bridge
In the hidden basement under the Zeilbrug, Feigl creates an incorporeal universe that defies the retina like a swarm with an unfathomable choreography, created by reflections and movement. Feigl is internationally known for his tactile, kinetic artworks. With this installation, stripped of all materiality, he displays his most poetic work to date.
Circus Elsewhere | Het Loket | Hoofddorpplein
Centrally on the square stands the OPLOSSIONS/PROBLEMS counter of Circus Andersom. The monument will raise questions; does it answer the questions that are not asked or does it raise questions that cannot be answered? In which the self-solving ability of the neighborhood will be tested. The interactive interpretation will mainly come from the local residents themselves. The collective (formerly Circus Engelbrecht) calls itself a ‘connecting disruption organization’.
Free state, pleasure garden, gnome look and floating poetry in the Vondelpark Studio Ossidiana | The birds’ palace
Vondel Park (from August)
In the water garden near the Amstelveenseweg entrance, Studio Ossidiana is creating a contemporary pleasure garden that allows man and bird to observe each other. This work evolves and changes during the 6 weeks of the manifestation; a cross-over between architecture, art and eco-design. This duo, consisting of Alessandra Covini and Giovanni Bellotti, is creating an international furore and is winner of the Prix-de Rome 2018.
Atelier van Lieshout | Moses | Vondelpark
The explicit and impressive Rhino Moses, which received a lot of attention from humans and animals when it was placed, houses a space in its belly where nefarious plans can be forged. The Rhino refers to both the armored warrior and the sacrificial animal. The work of driving force Joep van Lieshout is included in museum collections worldwide.
Maarten Bel | Vondelkabouter | Vondelpark
On the west side of the park lies a casually discarded giant beer can that regularly houses an oversized Vondelkabouter: Maarten Bel. He seduces passers-by into interaction in which he fishes for fantasies, acts as a referee, offers a dog walking service or simply plays a tune on his bagpipes, just like his gnome’s hat. A constant in Bel’s work is the questioning of the status quo.
Maria Barnas | Nachtinkt | Vondelpark
Near the Van Baerlestraat bridge, poems by Maria Barnas swirl from a tree. Her poem Nachtinkt arose from spontaneous encounters with the homeless under the bridge and observations of passers-by: in which the trees take names, the park slowly disappears under water… Barnas also recited her poem one on one during the opening to unsuspecting passers-by. Barnas writes poetry and is a visual artist. In her work she considers text and image of equal value.
