Winners of Heineken Prizes 2020 announced

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded this year’s Heineken Prizes to biochemist Bruce Stillman (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), bioengineer and psychiatrist Karl Deisseroth (Stanford University), science historian Lorraine Daston (Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte), climate scientist Corinne Le Quéré (University of East Anglia) and neuroscientist Robert Zatorre (McGill University). The laureates will receive the Heineken Prizes, $200,000 each, on Thursday, October 1, 2020.  

Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics
Bruce Stillman

Bruce Stillman, professor and president of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (United States) will receive the Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics 2020 for his groundbreaking research on how DNA is copied in eukaryotic cells, a process that is fundamental to life on Earth.

Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Medicine
Karl Deisseroth

Karl Deisseroth, professor of bioengineering, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University (United States) will receive the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Medicine 2020 for his development of optogenetics, a method by which the activity of nerve cells can be influenced with light, and hydrogel tissue chemistry, a technique that can make brain tissue transparent.

Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Historical Science
Lorraine Daston

Lorraine Daston, director emerita of the Max Planck Institut für Wissenschafts-geschichte (Germany) will receive the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Historical Science 2020 for her study of the development of the concept of objectivity and the revolution she brought about in the field of history of science. Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences
Corinne Le Quéré

Corinne Le Quéré, Royal Society research professor of climate change science at the University of East Anglia (England) is awarded the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences 2020 for her interdisciplinary research on the interaction between climate change and the carbon cycle.

C.L. de Carvalho-Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science
Robert Zatorre

Robert Zatorre, Professor of Neuroscience at McGill University (Canada) will receive the 2020 C.L. de Carvalho-Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science for his contribution to the field of music cognition. He is investigating how our nervous system allows us to create and enjoy music.

Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for the Arts
Ansuya Blom

On May 1 this year, it was announced that the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for the Arts 2020 will be awarded to visual artist Ansuya Blom.
